The Claws of Quillien

Quillien, the outermost planet of the Zhontaar system, is a cold and inhospitable world.  Its name is derived from the clusters of spiked stone spires that reach up from the rocky landscape to claw their way through the poisonous cloud layer.  Many of these spires have what appear to be dark, swirling portals on their sides.  It is unknown where (if anywhere) these lead; some scholars theorize that these portals lead into the interior of the planet, but the few explorers to pass within have never returned.  What is known, however, is that the spires emit pulses of powerful cosmic radiation at certain positions and times in its orbital year.  The beams emanating from the spires’ skeletal fingers are strong enough to fry the systems of any ship passing within a certain range.  As a result, Quillien’s landscape is a veritable graveyard of wrecked, decaying starships that dates back milliennia– a rich trove for scavengers and treasure-hunters daring enough to brave the planet’s dangers…
