Wanted: “Vasquez : Darkfighters”
WANTED: 1 poster. Black ink on heavy beige paper, approx. 11″ x 17″. Illustration: A striking image of a space-suited figure raising an energy rifle one-handed above his head, with a large full moon in the background. At the header, in all-caps: VASQUEZ. At the bottom, similarly: DARKFIGHTERS. It was an advertisement for interplanetary mercenaries, “needed immediately for combat in the belt.” The recruitment officer could be contacted at the Cafe Escadrille, in a dome somewhere on Luna. It looked to have been made in the late 1970s or early ’80s by an unknown designer.
I don’t remember much else about it anymore, but there was a time when I could have effortlessly rattled off every detail of that poster from memory. I can also tell you this: I was ready to join, even at the tender age of 9 or 10, with the Force flowing through my veins and space on the brain. I wasn’t a belter, or a rigger, a Z-G merc or whatever kind of specialist they wanted, but that didn’t matter.
I remember seeing the advertisement hanging in my dad’s office and being surprised, because sci-fi has never been his thing. I had a photocopy of it hanging on the back of my bedroom door for years, but when I moved away to college I think it must have been thrown away. In the past few years I’ve found myself thinking about that poster an awful lot, almost obsessing over it at times when trying to remember the details. My dad can’t find the original (he’s changed offices several times since the late 1980s), and my internet search-fu has turned up nothing.
The mysterious and elusive “Darkfighters” have lately been making forays into the forefront of my mind again, figuring into many recent Zhontaar-related musings as well as some modular-synth-musical ones… Any information that can help me track down this poster (or at least its digitized image) would be incredibly, majorly, highly, wonderfully appreciated!
